What can PHYSIOTHERAPY do for you?

What can PHYSIOTHERAPY do for you?

For a lot of our online followers – many of whom we know IRL –  the answer is pretty straightforward.

Physiotherapy helps when you have an injury. to return you to your normal way of life.

For those who haven’t had physiotherapy treatment, it may not be so clear.

What do Physios do?

Physiotherapy is the treatment of injury, disease and disorders through physical methods.

We work together with our clients/patients to achieve their goals. This may be to reduce pain, return to a sport or activity that they love, prevent or manage injuries or even facilitate long term wellbeing through advice and education. At The Healthy Body Company we focus on supporting our patients to be the best they can be – and we know that will be different for every person.

There are a variety of conditions that can be managed with physiotherapy management, these include:

  • Musculoskeletal injuries (such as fractures, sprains, strains, dislocations, stiffness and instability)
  • Vertigo
  • Osteoarthritis/osteoporosis

  • Jaw pain
  • Headaches
  • Neck and back pain

Physiotherapists also have an important role to play in the management of a range of conditions including:

  • Preventative work – pre-pointe assessments for dancers
  • Cancer
  • Diabetes
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Respiratory and cardiac disorders
  • Lymphoedema
  • MS
  • Inflammatory conditions
  • Paediatric conditions.

How do we do it?

Australian physiotherapists are highly trained and well regarded around the world.  In Australia physiotherapists are first line practitioners which means that you can see a physiotherapist without a referral from a GP or specialist.

When you visit your physiotherapist for a condition or complaint that they have not seen before, they will firstly complete a thorough examination. T

At initial assessment your physiotherapist will perform a range of manual tests to assist in the diagnosis of your condition.  Here is Tom Hamilton working with a patient at our Penrith clinic.

he physiotherapist will ask a series of questions to discern the nature of the injury. They will then conduct a range of specific and appropriate manual tests to provide you with a diagnosis. In some cases imaging may be needed to confirm the diagnosis.

What does Physiotherapy treatment or management involve?

  • Education and advice regarding the condition – to really get the outcome that you want it is important that you understand exactly what is going on, and the most recent evidence (research) on the best management
  • Hands on techniques (including massage) – this can include very deep tissue therapy that you may find uncomfortable
  • Exercise prescription
  • Electrotherapies (TENS or Shockwave therapy)
  • Use of Heat or Ice packs

The frequency of your physiotherapy sessions will vary depending on the condition. However, as you progress toward your goals your need for physiotherapy treatment will decrease.

What else do Physio’s do?

Nathan Duguid, Physiotherapist Jordan SPrings

Nathan Duguid has worked extensively with elite Touch Football players of all ages with NSW Touch Football.

You may have seen on our social media that our physios run group exercise classes and also attend sporting events.

We enjoy the opportunity to support all members of our community to be as active as possible.  To support this work some of our Physiotherapists have completed further training to assist those with some chronic conditions such as diabetes and Parkinson’s disease.

Our training also gives us the expertise needed to assess and manage acute injuries which can occur at sporting events.  We work closely with NSW Touch Football, Australian Touch Football, Softball NSW and a number of local sporting clubs and associations in soccer, basketball and rugby league.

Thinking about a career in Physiotherapy?

We offer paid internships for final year physiotherapy students and run a graduate program for early career physiotherapists that is second to none.
