How to strap your own ankle

As physiotherapists, one of the valuable tools for in our arsenal dealing with injury or instability is strapping.

Ankle strapping involves applying a supportive adhesive tape tape around the ankle joint to provide stability, protect against injuries, and aid in rehabilitation.

  1. Enhanced Stability: Ankle strapping provides external support to the ankle joint, improving its stability and reducing the risk of excessive movement or sprains. It acts as a mechanical reinforcement, limiting the range of motion and providing a sense of security during physical activities.
  2. Injury Prevention: By limiting excessive ankle movement, strapping helps prevent ligament sprains and other soft tissue injuries. It particularly benefits athletes participating in high-impact sports or those with a history of ankle instability. The added stability reduces the risk of ankle rolls, twists, and other traumatic incidents.
  3. Rehabilitation Aid: Ankle strapping plays a crucial role in the rehabilitation process. It can support and protect injured ligaments or tendons, allowing them to heal properly. Strapping may also provide proprioceptive feedback, improving the body’s awareness of ankle positioning and movement. This feedback aids in balance, coordination, and the gradual restoration of normal function.
  4. Confidence and Performance: Ankle strapping instills confidence in individuals recovering from ankle injuries or those with weak or unstable ankles. The added support allows athletes to focus on their performance without the fear of reinjury or loss of balance. This confidence boost can positively impact their overall performance and encourage a quicker return to sports or physical activities.
  5. Customisable Support: Physiotherapists can tailor ankle strapping techniques based on individual needs. They can address specific areas of weakness, such as the lateral or medial ligaments, providing targeted support. This customised approach ensures that the strapping technique is effective and aligns with the patient’s unique requirements.

Ankle strapping is a valuable technique employed by physiotherapists to enhance stability, prevent injuries, and aid in rehabilitation. The added support promotes confidence, protects against excessive movement, and facilitates the healing process. If you have a history of ankle instability or are recovering from an ankle injury, consult with a physiotherapist to determine if ankle strapping is suitable for you. Remember, proper assessment, technique, and guidance are essential for optimal results.  To learn about the differences between strapping and bracing – read this.

Note:

It’s important to consult with a qualified physiotherapist or healthcare professional for appropriate assessment, strapping techniques, and guidance tailored to your individual needs.
